Wedding home decoration: the cloth side, from entrance to seating to table

Deep red cotton tablecloth on a dining table set with white plates and red napkins, a plant in the centre

Take one house: a front door, a three-seater sofa with two chairs, a 150 x 90 cm dining table and a 120 cm sideboard in the hall. A mehendi, a haldi and a sangeet are all happening here within a few days. This is the cloth for that house, priced from our site on 30 October 2026.

Where What Size Price
Front door Coir mat, red with a black border 75 x 45 cm ₹789
Sofa and chairs Velvet covers, red, pair 40 x 40 cm ₹459
Sofa and chairs Velvet covers, camel, pair 40 x 40 cm ₹459
Sofa and chairs Embossed velvet covers, maroon, pair 40 x 40 cm ₹599
Dining table, evenings Cotton cloth, deep red 72 x 56 in ₹999
Dining table, haldi Cotton cloth, plain yellow 72 x 56 in ₹999
Dining table, haldi Cotton runner, red 32 x 200 cm ₹499
Sideboard Embossed velvet runner, maroon 32 x 150 cm ₹449

That adds up to ₹5,252: ₹789 for the door, ₹1,517 for the seats and ₹2,946 for the tables. It is one example, not a package, so swap in your own sizes and cut any line.

In wedding home decoration, flowers, lights and rangoli do the work you see from across a room. Cloth looks after the places people touch: the door, the seats and the table. For each one, ask what will land on it, how it washes, and whether you will use it after the wedding.

This guide is for a wedding held at or around your own home. We sell no flowers, lights, torans or rangoli, and other guides do those better.

What cloth can do in wedding home decoration, and where it stops

Cloth changes the colour of furniture you already own, with no hire charge, and most of it goes in the wash afterwards. It cannot give you height or scale. Nothing in the list above will be seen from the gate. A mandap, a stage, a backdrop or a drape down the staircase railing needs many metres of cloth, a frame, and someone who knows how to hang it. Most of our fabric by the metre sells in 1 m cuts, so we are the wrong shop for that job. A tent house or decorator brings the cloth, the frame and the labour together. If the budget stops short of that, family sarees tied along a railing cost nothing for a day or two, and a spare curtain can do the same.

Cloth also does not make anything spill-proof. Washable only means you get a second chance.

House decoration for a wedding, one event at a time

Wedding decoration ideas at home are often sorted by room. It helps more to sort them by what is likely to land on the cloth that day.

Mehendi and haldi usually happen in daylight, and they are the messy ones. Paste, oil and wet hands are everywhere, and people sit for a long time. Near the action, use cotton whose care label allows the machine, in a colour you will not mind marking.

The sangeet is usually in the evening. There is less paste and softer light, and this is where velvet earns its place. It looks rich under warm lamps, and it stays away from the sun, which is hard on it.

The wedding day brings the most guests. The door takes the traffic, seats get used for hours, and the buffet collects oil. On that day, pick by how the cloth will wear and wash first, and by how it looks second.

Which colours work for a wedding at home?

Red, maroon, yellow and gold read as wedding colours to many Indian families, and they are kind to you. Pale cloth shows turmeric at once, while a deep colour usually hides it until you can deal with it. Oil is different, because it can darken a deep colour too. For stains on table linen, use our haldi stains guide.

The trap is mixing reds. Two reds from different cloths seldom match, and side by side they can look like a mistake. Red next to maroon works because the step between them is clear. Colour also shifts under your own lights, so if you have time, order one piece and look at it in the evening before you order the rest.

How to decorate the entrance for a wedding

Flowers and a toran take care of the eye level. The mat takes care of the floor, which at a home wedding is often where shoes come off and pile up. Coir suits this because its stiff surface scrapes dirt off shoes, and you clean it with a brush and a good shake, not a wash.

Our pick for this list is the red Greek key coir mat. It is a solid red with a black border, so it looks like part of the wedding and tends to hide dirt better than a pale mat. If you want the word on the mat, the Welcome Leaf coir mat says it for you, though its natural beige ground and autumn leaves are less wedding and more everyday. Both come at 60 x 40 cm (₹549) and 75 x 45 cm (₹789).

A 75 cm mat will look small at a double door. Do not try to fix that with a second mat. Let the flowers or rangoli fill the width. If you are unsure about coir, the coir door mat guide explains how it behaves.

Guest seating: cushion covers on the sofas you already have

Two maroon embossed velvet cushion covers with a damask pattern on a beige sofa

These are covers only, so they need cushions inside. Check what you already have against the cushion cover size guide before you order. Six covers suit our example house, four on the sofa and one on each chair. If your layout is different, this guide to cushion counts works it out.

The mix in the list has a reason. Velvet Red is a true strong red and carries most of the colour. The embossed velvet maroon has a raised damask pattern, so it adds texture and steps down from the red. The camel pair is Velvet Gold, which in its photos is a warm camel with a soft sheen. It makes a calm break between the red and the maroon, but if you are picturing zari, this will not give you that look.

Velvet has two weak spots at a wedding. It can flatten and shine where people sit, so it belongs against the backrest and not on the seat itself. And it should stay indoors, away from the haldi and the mehendi. For a mehendi corner where the bride sits for hours, a plain cotton cover from the cushion cover collection is the safer choice.

Tables: buffet, sideboard and puja

A loaded buffet hides its own top. Guests see the front drop of the cloth and very little else, so a runner on a buffet disappears under the dishes. Put the money into one good cloth in a strong colour.

On our 150 x 90 cm table, the Cotton Deep Red cloth at 72 x 56 inches hangs about 16 cm at each end and 26 cm along each side. Your table will differ, so use the tablecloth size chart and the wider table cloth collection. The same cloth also comes as a 56 x 56 inch square for ₹989, which suits a small puja table. Oil will reach it sooner or later, and our oil stains guide covers that. None of these cloths is a heat mat, so put a stand under hot dishes and keep burners and diyas clear of any hanging edge.

The sideboard is the place to show off a little, because nobody eats there. The embossed velvet maroon runner has small white tassels at the ends. At 150 cm it hangs about 15 cm past each end of a 120 cm sideboard. For a longer or shorter sideboard, check the table runner size guide.

Haldi decoration at home: what cloth can add

Most of the look at a haldi comes from marigolds. Cloth does one useful thing, which is to give the paste table a colour that turmeric cannot spoil very much. Turmeric on yellow tends to show least, which is the case for the Cotton Sunbeam Yellow cloth. Oil will still darken it, and that is a job for the wash.

Lay a Cotton Solid Red runner down the middle. The thalis and bowls sit on it, and you can lift it off and wash it on its own if only the runner gets marked. Take the 200 cm length here, because the 150 cm one ends exactly at the edge of a 150 cm table and leaves nothing hanging. It will not stop paste soaking through to the cloth below.

For a haldi lunch away from the paste, our Jaipuri block print cloth is prettier, with mustard flowers and green leaves. Look closely, though, and you will see the ground is white. Small flecks may get lost in the flowers, but a handful of paste will show.

Guests who stay for the week

Oval beige and off-white striped cotton rug on a wooden floor beside a bed

Some guests stay for days, but a guest room needs little: a pair of clean covers on the chair, and something soft where feet land in the morning. The Cotton Rug in beige and off-white works for that: the 60 x 150 cm oval (₹1,499) fits along the side of a bed. It is optional, so it is not in the sum above.

Do not stretch it into a seating plan. It comes only round or oval, the largest is 122 x 183 cm, and the listing says hand wash only. That makes it a poor choice for floor seating at a haldi. For a crowd on the floor, ask the tent house.

What you keep after the wedding

Flowers last the event, and hired drapes go back. Everything in the list above stays with you. The mat goes straight back to daily use. The maroon and red covers and the deep red cloth will come out again at Diwali, and our Diwali table setting guide picks up from there. The bright yellow cloth is the piece you may use least, so skip it if there is no haldi at home.

Before you put anything away, wash it. Zip the velvet covers closed first, as the plain velvet listings ask. Do not bleach the cotton cloths, and wash the deep reds on their own the first time. Line-dry them all out of strong sun, unless a turmeric mark on cotton needs the sun treatment in the haldi stains guide, and check for marks before you fold anything away.

Frequently asked questions

How can I decorate my house for a wedding on a budget?

Spend on the things every guest sees up close, and hire or skip the rest. A mat, a few cushion covers and one strong tablecloth change how a home feels, and you can use them again. If money is tight, drop the runners first, then one pair of covers.

What cloth should I use for a haldi at home?

Cotton in yellow or red, with a care label that allows machine washing. Keep velvet, silk and anything embroidered in another room until the paste has gone.

Can I make a wedding backdrop or mandap from fabric by the metre?

You can, but you need far more length than most of our cuts offer, as well as a frame to hang it from. For a backdrop at that scale, a decorator or tent house is the practical route. For a small photo corner, sarees you already own are a cheaper start.
