Home textiles are not on the traditional Dhanteras list. The day belongs to metal: gold or silver for those who can, a new steel or brass vessel for the kitchen, and in many homes a new broom. But Dhanteras is also the day the whole family is out shopping, two days before Diwali, and the house is usually the next thing on the list.
So here is the short answer. If you are buying for the home on Dhanteras, buy things you can use the moment they come out of the packet: cushion covers, a doormat, a bathmat for the guest bathroom. Anything that needs washing, ironing, hemming or a few days on the rod to lose its folds should be ordered a couple of weeks earlier. In 2026 Dhanteras is Friday 6 November and Diwali is Sunday 8 November. That gives you two days, and one of them is the day of the puja itself.
What can you still use by Sunday?
The useful question for any item is how long it takes to go from packet to ready. Some textiles take minutes. Others take days, and the days are what Dhanteras does not have.
Curtains are the slowest. They arrive folded, and the fold lines show clearly on a lit window. Steaming helps, and hanging them for a few days lets the weight pull most creases out, but neither is quick. And if the length turns out wrong, an alteration will not happen over a festival weekend.
Cotton tablecloths come next. They need an iron before a dinner. A deep red or maroon one should get its first wash on its own, because strong dyes can release extra colour the first time. Our guide to colour bleeding in the wash explains why. That is a wash, a dry and an iron, which is fine on a Friday if the weather is dry and tight if it rains.
Kitchen towels often feel less absorbent until they have been washed once or twice, because of the finish fabric gets at the mill. You can use them straight away; they simply work better after a wash.
At the fast end are cushion covers, doormats and bathmats. A cushion cover goes over the insert you already have and that is the end of it. A doormat goes straight onto the floor.
The list, sorted by how much prep each item needs
| Item | Ready out of the packet? | Prep before use | Buy on Dhanteras? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cushion covers | Yes | None, if your inserts fit | Yes |
| Coir doormat | Yes | Shake out loose fibres | Yes |
| Bathmat | Yes | None | Yes |
| Cotton napkins | Nearly | A quick iron for a formal table | Yes |
| Kitchen towels | Usable at once | Absorb better after a wash | Yes, ideally wash first |
| Cotton tablecloth | No | Wash dark colours first, then iron | Only if you can wash on Friday |
| Round or braided rug | No | Some need ironing flat or a day to settle | Order earlier |
| Curtains | No | Check length, steam or hang out creases | Order earlier |
Entrance: a new doormat earns its place

The entrance takes a lot of traffic over Diwali. Guests visit for days, shoes pile up, and rangoli powder and diya oil get tracked in on feet. It is also where many families draw Lakshmi's footprints and set the first diyas, so a tired mat stands out.
Coir is the right material here. Its stiff fibres scrape grit off soles, and it does not mind a dusting of rangoli colour. The Coir Welcome Leaf Door Mat comes in 60 x 40 cm and 75 x 45 cm and has an anti-skid backing. Take the 75 x 45 cm if the doorway has room, because a bigger mat catches more steps. Plain, coloured and Greek key coir mats are in the door mat collection. Give a new coir mat a firm shake outside before you lay it, as some loose fibre is normal at first.
A second mat for an inside room can wait. The money does more at the main door.
Living room: cushion covers yes, curtains only if you started early
The living room is where guests sit, so this is where a small change shows most. Cushion covers are the obvious Dhanteras buy because they need no prep and they change the room in a few minutes.
Velvet suits the season. It picks up lamp light and looks rich in maroon, gold or deep green. The Velvet Maroon Cushion Cover comes in a pack of two, in 40, 45, 50 and 60 cm. Before you order, measure the insert you already have, because a cover one size too large looks limp. For a 16 inch insert, take the 40 cm. For help choosing colours and mixing them, see our guide to festive cushion covers for Diwali.
On curtains, we would say skip, unless you ordered them by mid-October. New curtains that arrive on Friday will hang with fold lines through Diwali, and the fold lines show most at night when the lamps are lit. If you want a change this late, wash and rehang the curtains you already have. Our Diwali cleaning guide for soft furnishings has an order that leaves curtains plenty of time to dry.
Dining table: small pieces over a new tablecloth
A Diwali dinner is a good reason to refresh the table, but a new tablecloth has the slowest prep of the dining pieces and the most ways to go wrong. If you do not know your table's exact size, you can easily order the wrong cut. Cloth napkins and a runner are easier: they are forgiving on size and need only a quick iron.
Plain cotton napkins in the napkin collection come in several pack sizes. Count your guests, then add a few, because napkins get used for spills and sweets during the meal. If you already own a tablecloth you like, a runner on top in a festive colour gives it a new look without the prep.
Skip: a white or cream tablecloth for a dinner with haldi-heavy food, unless you are ready to treat stains the same night.
Kitchen: the textiles that go with the new vessels

If the Dhanteras purchase is a new kadhai, a steel set or a pressure cooker, the kitchen will be busy all weekend. Diwali cooking involves a lot of frying and sweets, so the kitchen goes through towels much faster than usual.
Terry is the weave to buy for drying. Its loops hold water, and it is thicker than a flat-weave cloth, which helps when you grab a hot handle. The Cotton Red Terry Kitchen Towel is a pack of four 60 x 40 cm towels, and red hides turmeric better than white does. Wash them on Friday if you can, so they absorb properly by Sunday. Waffle and flat-weave options are in the kitchen towel collection, and our kitchen towel guide explains which weave suits which job.
Guest bathroom: one bathmat, not a full set

Visitors will use the guest bathroom all weekend, and a damp, flat old mat is the thing they notice. A microfibre mat is ready the minute it leaves the packet and tends to dry faster than a thick cotton one. The Microfibre Grey Bathmat is 60 x 40 cm with a grip backing, which matters on wet tiles when the house is full of older relatives and children.
Matching towel sets and a new shower curtain can wait until after the festival. Nobody notices them over a busy weekend the way they notice a wet mat.
Questions about Dhanteras shopping for the home
Is it auspicious to buy cloth on Dhanteras?
Customs differ by family and region. Dhanteras is most closely tied to buying metal, such as gold, silver and utensils. Many families also shop for the house on the day without any concern. If your family has its own rule, follow that.
When should I order online to have things by Diwali?
Order items that need prep, such as curtains, rugs and dark tablecloths, by mid-October. That leaves time for delivery, a wash and a few days to hang out. For items you can use straight away, check the delivery estimate at checkout. An order placed on Dhanteras itself may not arrive before Sunday.
What is the one textile worth buying if the budget is small?
A doormat for the main door. It is cheap, it needs no prep, and every guest walks over it.
Should new cushion covers be washed before use?
Usually not. They can go straight onto the inserts. If you have them, check the care label for any first-wash advice, especially on dark colours placed on a light sofa.
